Shell Oil logo. Original art tshirt printed with discharge inks on ultra soft 100% ring-spun cotton.
The origin of this image is the 1930's version of the Shell Oil logo. My artistic intent very specific here. I've long been an advocate of action to address the challenge of global climate change. Primary to that effort is the necessary elimination of fossil fuels by mid-century. The graphical allegory becomes my use of negative space to convey the removal of the use of their products as a form of energy (note, the printing is the area around the logo rather than the logo itself).
The 1930's version of this logo is unique in the historical progression of Shell's logo, where this version retains much of the original natural look the earliest Shell logos while starting to adopt a harder, graphical sensibility. It's around this time that humanity's uses of fossil fuel based energy began to escalate.
While subtle, I believe this work becomes an artistically transformative image and as well as a representation of my own commentary on broader social aspirations.
